Epaulette Top--Self-Drafted!

Friends I am just pleased as punch with my latest top!

I've been searching for a pattern for the top in my head: loose-fitting, long enough, epaulettes, button tab sleeves...I finally decided to just draft it myself!

This is the second time I've self-drafted, and it came out WAY better than the first time. I feel like the details attempted (and achieved) are a real testament to how far my skills and confidence as a sewist have come.  The epaulette shoulders (double layered) WITH tucks on front and back,

the self-fabric bias tape neckline,

the set-in sleeves with button tabs...

all are things I'm very proud to know I designed, drafted, and pulled off by my very own self.

Having absolutely no knowledge of pattern drafting, I just measured my own body and then free-handed to pattern pieces I knew I'd need, then made a muslin, altered, and took the plunge with this delish cotton voile from my shop. It was very guess-and-check but lots of fun...kind of felt like what I want to do when I grow up! :)

Friends, do you have a perfect garment in your head that you just can't find? Tell me all about it!

  3. Beautiful work, my Dear! So proud of you! I always look for tops that are loose enough, but flattering at the same time; long enough (always tough with my tall frame) and with sleeves that cover my upper arms without looking tight or old-lady-ish! I think the top you designed is perfect!
